Matteo Correggia Backgrounder

After Matteo Correggia inherited his family’s Roero vineyards in 1985 at the age of 23, he continued building their prestigious business farming excellent Nebbiolo for sale to Barolo wineries.

Correggia’s fruit was so outstanding that Barolo legends Roberto Voerzio and Elio Altare urged him to make a Roero designate even though it had never been done before.   By 1987, Correggia debuted his now famous La Val dei Preti Nebbiolo, Roero’s first cru bottling.  The wine was a hit, and soon Correggia was added to the Barolo Boys circuit, giving him nearly instant access to international markets.

After Matteo was killed in a tractor accident in 2001, his widow Ornella led the winery to even greater heights. She introduced organic and biodynamic practices, committed to low intervention winemaking and focused the winery on estate production. Their son Giovanni Correggia has become winemaker and export manager, deftly managing the brand globally.  In addition to three levels of their flagship Nebbiolo, the wines now include Arneis and a Riserva Arneis; Barbera and a Riserva Barbera; two Bracchettos -- one dry and a dessert. 

Correggia’s estate covers 20 hectares of prime, steep sloping vineyards with classic Roero sandy soils. The estate is organically farmed with biodynamic practices; fruit is harvested by plot for perfect ripeness. The wines are vinified in stainless steel vats at controlled temperatures with native yeasts. Aging regimens prioritize neutral vessels.
